How expressing and bottle feeding stopped the return to work stresses whilst involving the family at feeding time
Ellie’s Bottle Feeding Journey with Son Acer
We speak to Ellie as she tells us about her bottle feeding journey whilst expressing and how it helped her partner and family get involved when feeding her son Acer. Ellie lives in the UK with her partner and son.
My son was born on New Year’s Eve 2019. Before he arrived, I was undecided whether I would bottle feed or breast feed, I just thought whatever works.
I had already purchased the steriliser, milk prep machine and loads of closer to nature bottles. He arrived, and breast feeding worked for us, but I wanted my partner to experience giving him a bottle, along with my family members who would be looking after him when I returned to work. I purchased the Tommee Tippee hand pump to try which has been the best thing yet!
As soon as he was given his milk using the closer to nature bottle he was sucking away, and his Dad loved being able to feed him. It was so nice to see and hassle free, we were amazed how he just latched on to the bottle without any drama. Bottle feeding saved us. It enabled me to return to work in the NHS without worrying about my son and how he will get his milk. It’s also given me a break from feeds as I can express milk easily and my partner can help which has been a massive help for me but also a lovely experience for him. My family can also enjoy bottle feeding him too. It’s enabled Acers Daddy, Nana, Gramps and Auntie to enjoy milk time and for me to have one less thing to worry about. The only issue I experienced while bottle feeding is spilling the milk! It’s true what they say, there’s no point crying over spilt milk but it was a struggle at the time!
The tip I would give new Mumma’s on bottle feeding and feeding in general is to not rule anything out. You never know what’s going to work for you until you try it. Tommee Tippee products enabled me to breast feed, express milk and has helped me through the weaning process too. But equally if breast feeding didn’t work then formula feeding would have been just as beneficial.
