What foods should I avoid giving my child?
There are certain foods you should avoid giving your baby, including:
Baby Foods To Avoid
Salt
Do not add it to any foods you make for your baby. That means avoiding stock cubes or gravy granules in your baby’s food. When your baby starts eating the same food as the family, be sure not to add any salt while cooking. You can buy low sodium stock cubes in most supermarkets .
Sugar
It’s easy to get into the habit of giving your baby something sweet after a meal but it is a hard habit to break in later life plus you risk your baby’s teeth.
Honey
Strange as it may sound it is advisable not to give honey until your baby is at least one year old as it can contain bacteria that can cause illness.
Whole nuts
These can be a choking hazard and so they are not recommended for children under the age of five.
Low fat foods
Fats are an important part of a child’s diet and a source of fat-soluble vitamins as well as providing fuel for growth.
Common allergens
Occasionally a child will be allergic to a certain food type. The most common are cow’s milk, eggs, wheat and gluten, nuts, seeds, fish and shellfish so never introduce these before 6 months old and make sure you introduce these one at a time so you can spot any potential reaction.
